UN: Russian Ambassador interrupts minute’s silence for Ukraine

Several uncrewed surface vessels (USV) and an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) have reportedly attempted to strike the Russian naval base of Sevastopol in occupied Crimea. According to open-source reports, at least three USVs were involved in the attack. One USV was stopped by defensive booms, while two were destroyed in the harbour.

This is not the first time that Sevastopol has come under attack from USVs. On October 29, 2022, a previous USV attack reportedly damaged the minesweeper Ivan Golubets and the frigate Admiral Makarov.

Although it appears that the latest attack failed to damage any military assets, the USV threat continues to constrain operations of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The unmanned vessels have become a significant security challenge for the Russian military, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The MoD’s latest intelligence briefing on Ukraine stated: “Even though the new attacks likely failed to damage any military assets, the USV threat likely continues to constrain operations of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.”
