Rapport said that cops saw from Small’s mobile phone that £175 had been withdrawn earlier.

The newspaper claimed that Small collapsed at The Harem which describes itself on its Facebook page as a “gentleman’s club that caters for every need” offering an “adult entertainment service”.

Small was known as the “bad boy” of South African rugby during his five year international career from 1992 to 1997.

He was famed for his speed and was capped 47 times while scoring 20 tries.

Small was an outspoken player who is remembered for going over the top and he was the first Springbok to be sent off in a Test match for arguing with a referee.

Friends have revealed how Nelson Mandela phoned him during a dark moment and helped him to get his life back on track.

The former player’s brother-in-law Gavin Houlston wouldn’t comment on the reports surrounding his death.

He said: “James’ legacy speaks for itself.

“Given how well known James was we understand the media and public interest.

“The James we know made mistakes. Yes, he battled tough times. Who hasn’t?”
