The Royal Family is desperate for England to return from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as champions, according to an expert who reckons it is only “natural” for the monarchy to want football to come home.

Top royals including Prince William and Kate Middleton have made no secret of their love for the Three Lions – and they’ve clearly passed their love of football on to young royal Prince George, who was seen cheering his country on during the 2020 Euros.

Royal expert Brittani Barger told the Daily Star at the time that The Firm would be cheering on Gareth Southgate’s men in the same way millions of others were throughout the country.

And one year on, they are sure to feel the same passion for a footballing tournament on an even bigger stage.

Talking about the family’s love for the England team, she explained: “They will all be wanting 'football to come home' as is natural.

“Let's hope England can do it and we can hopefully see some cute father/son moments with William and George rooting on England.”

Although the tournament’s controversial Qatari location has seen Prince William refuse to attend matches in person, he made his excitement clear on Twitter and wrote he was “wishing the very best of luck” to both Wales and England.

The Duke of Cambridge added he was “looking forward to watching” the matches.

But enjoying this year’s series of games from the comfort of their home may provide some respite for Kate Middleton and Prince William, who will be pleased to avoid another confrontation over whether Prince George can wear an England top.

The pair reportedly became embroiled in a row before England’s Euro 2020 final versus Italy because the royal couple couldn’t agree on whether to let Prince George wear his football shirt in support of the Three Lions.

Whilst Kate was reportedly “not so keen” on the young royal showing his passion with the team colours, William was said to be all for it.

Even King Charles has admitted he is prone to becoming too caught up in the footie, telling reporters after England’s tense extra-time win against Denmark last year that it had been “rather too much for the nerves”.

George ended up wearing a suit to the showpiece final against Italy.
