Royal baby name: Why experts believe Meghan Markle may choose a gender-neutral name
But experts believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could choose a gender-neutral name.
The national is patiently waiting for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to reveal their baby’s name.
The royal baby was born in the early hours of May 6, and was a week overdue.
Meghan and Harry revealed they would be keeping the details of the birth privately until they had time to celebrate as a family.
But Dr Pilcher believes Meghan and Harry may choose a gender-neutral name for their baby.
She explained: “The name Avery is ranked 14th in the US for girls but in the UK it’s 637th and is almost as popular a name for boys, ranking at 581st.
“Given Meghan’s feminism, she may choose a forename for her son, like Avery, that is more gender neutral.”
After it was revealed the royal baby was a boy James and Arthur became joint-favourites.
Betfair spokeswoman Katie Baylis said: “James and Arthur are the joint-favourites at 7/2, both slashed from 12/1 after a flurry of bets on both names in the last hours.
“They overtake previous favourite for a boy, Arthur, which is at 6/1, with two equally traditional names Edward and Oliver at 14/1.”
But the sociologist believes the cultural differences in perception of names in the UK and the US could have an influence on the name.
In addition, Lars B Andersen, Managing Director at My Nametags, said the top children’s names in Britain rarely change, but in America there is a constant shift.
He said: “So, while Harry may be opting for a traditional name, his wife may be hoping for a more modern, trendier moniker for their first child.”
This is the first Royal baby to be born to British and American parents, which could mean those hoping they will choose a traditional British name are disappointed, according to Dr Pilcher.
