Royal artist ‘savaged’ for giving William more hair in portrait with Harry

A royal artist has revealed she was criticised after appearing to give Prince William more hair than he really had in a portrait of him and Prince Harry.

Nicky Philips spent time with Harry and William in 2008 to create a portrait of them together but she says she was “savaged” for how she portrayed the Duke of Cambridge's hair.

She painted the two brothers for the National Portrait Gallery and opened up about working with the princes in the latest episode of ITV 's Keeping Up With The Aristocrats.

The artist even revealed her huge request of William and Harry coming to her home for the painting, which the princes did in full uniform on five occasions so that Nicky could complete the work.

Nicky said: “That was in 2008 when I got savaged for giving William too much hair.

"I think the poor chap lost quite a lot of it in 2009. I don’t know what happened then but it all fell out.”

She also commented on how “close” the two were during the painting of the portrait as Harry admitted in an ITV documentary in 2019 that the pair now have “good days, you have bad days.”

The painting was presented to William and Harry while they were on a royal tour in Barbados in 2010.

After the painting was revealed, even Harry commented on the generous amount of hair William was given.

He also made remarks over his own portrait by saying he was made “too ginger”.

Harry, who was 25 at the time, said: “"I don’t know, I’m a little bit more ginger in there than I am in real life, I think.

"And he got given more hair so, apart from that, it is what it is, but it’s nice.

"It could have been worse."

William has gradually shown signs of baldness since 2006 and even his wife does not let him live it down.

Kate Middleton has also joked about William’s hair in the past during a tour in Australia, according to E! News.

Lyn Crejan, a farmer from Glenn Innes in New South Wales, showed the couple a tuft of alpaca wool and as she showed it to them, Kate suggested William should put it on his head.

Crejan told reporters: "She (Kate) said 'You need it more than me,' and pointed to his head and he laughed."
