Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid are looking forward to watching the new Minions film after turning against Boris Johnson and leaving the Cabinet, or so a meme suggests.

Both Sunak and Javid handed in their resignations in the space of 15 minutes on Tuesday night (July 5), as a long-rumbling row over standards in a scandal-hit Downing Street erupted into chaos.

Earlier in the day, Johnson was forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of claims he knew about claims of the Tories' Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher's inappropriate behaviour.

Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.

And in the wake of Sunak and Javid's incredibly public resignations – with both letters posted on Twitter within 12 minutes of each other – a pic of the two arm in arm at a Star Wars movie premiere was doing the rounds online.

Twitter user @soapyxxx sent the picture viral after she shared it alongside the caption: "Two tickets to Minions: The Rise of Gru, please."

It's in reference to popular meme dubbed 'Gentleminions' which has been sweeping the internet.

It's safe to say that in the wake of Tuesday's news the image provoked a mixed reaction on social media.

One user Tweeted: "Darth Maul would flatten both of them without blinking."

Whilst another added: " Boris Johnson has this pic on a dartboard right now."

And others saw a chance to have some fun…

"The new surprise couple entering ‘ Strictly Come Dancing ’ this series just announced!" wrote one.

Another Tweeted: "Let me buy you a pint, you win today!"

The resignations came as Mr Johnson was forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.

Betting has since been suspended on Boris Johnson resigning as Prime Minster in 2022.
