Retired crane operator slams 'gender neutral' kitten description

Retired crane operator ‘sick to death of LBGTQRXYZ stuff’ slams rescue of a ‘gender neutral’ kitten

  • Jack Rawcliffe complained about Bradford Cat Watch Rescue’s description
  • The rescue centre shared a picture on social media of hermaphrodite Dixie
  • Jack was inundated with replies hitting back at his ‘insulting’ opinions

A retired construction worker who is ‘sick to death of LBGTQRXYZ stuff’ has blasted a cat rescue after it revealed it’s caring for a GENDER NEUTRAL kitten.

Jack Rawcliffe took to social media to slam Bradford Cat Watch Rescue (BCWR) after they shared a picture of hermaphrodite Dixie on Tuesday.

BCWR Care co-ordinator Katie Lloyd declared the tiny six-month-old kitten was gender neutral due to them having both a vagina and testicles.

Among the dozens of positive comments praising the black cat’s beauty, Jack slammed the wording Katie used, telling her that Dixie was hermaphrodite not gender neutral.

Former crane operator Jack, who’s from Bradford and believed to be in his mid-70s, said he was ‘sick to death of this LBGTQRXYZ stuff’ and that it was ‘bad enough that kids don’t know which way is up these days’.

However, Jack was inundated with replies hitting back at his ‘insulting’ opinions – and the comments have since been deleted.

At first Jack defended his comments and claimed that LGBT is a ‘lifestyle choice’ but that the cat was not gender neutral. However he later apologised for causing any offence.

Katie’s post reads: ‘Dixie is our first Hermaphrodite. ‘He has spent the day in the vets having exploratory surgery to fathom what exactly his physical make up is. ‘We have defined Dixie as gender neutral. ‘Whilst Dixie’s external genitalia is female, internally it is almost certainly male

Katie, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, said: ‘I think he’s a t*sser, I’ve had dealings with him before.

‘We’re such a positive rescue and try to make light of pretty bad situations.

‘You can’t please everyone all of the time, there’s always going to be a group of people that will take exception to anything you write. It’s just water off a duck’s back.’

When contacted for comment, Jack stuck to his guns at first and insisted that calling a cat gender neutral was ‘perfectly unnecessary’ – though he later admitted they were comments made ‘off the top of his head’.

Jack added: ‘It’s not a gender neutral cat, it’s a hermaphrodite. People are entitled to their opinion.

Katie Lloyd, 41, with Dixie. In response to Jack’s comments, Katie, from Bradford said: ‘I think he’s a t*sser, I’ve had dealings with him before. ‘We’re such a positive rescue and try to make light of pretty bad situations’

‘LGBT is a lifestyle choice, I don’t go around saying ‘I’m straight and proud’. If you’re gay that’s fine no matter what gender you choose.

‘I think it’s perfectly unnecessary [to say a cat is gender neutral], everybody should just live their lives.

‘That cat rescue does a fabulous job, I adopted my cat Kable from there four years ago.’

However Jack then later added: ‘Katie’s a splendid human being and I hate to think I caused offence, but I obviously did. I was just voicing an opinion.

‘I’m so sad it’s come to this. It was a comment I made off the top of my head, this gender neutral thing gets to me.’

Katie’s post reads: ‘Dixie is our first Hermaphrodite.

‘Whilst Dixie’s external genitalia is female, internally it is almost certainly male.

‘2 oddly formed structures which we pp [SIC] are testicles were removed from the inguinal canal.

‘The tissue removed has been sent off for analysis.

‘Hermaphrodite-or intersex-cats do not frequently occur and, if they do, they are often tortoiseshell, so Dixie is one of the more unusual cats to be found.

‘Each case with hermaphroditic cats is different and unique, so Dixie will have regular checks with our vet to plan future care and ensure that s/he remains healthy.

‘Despite his uniqueness this makes him no less lovable….. and soon we hope he will be available for his special home.’

In response to the post Jack wrote: ‘Aww come on, a gender neutral cat ?

Craig Rawlinson was one of those who criticized Jack’s comments

Other social media users praised Dixie’s beauty

‘Katie….hermaphrodite….not gender neutral, please, please, please. It’s bad enough that kids don’t know which way is up these days…..’

When called out by social media users, he replied: ‘Sorry love. I’m just sick to death of this LBGTQRXYZ stuff.

‘I’m not anti anything. Be who you want to be. But a gender neutral cat? Gimme a break!

‘Btw, my fur baby is from BCWR, and I love HER to bits. Please don’t take me into a fight over this.

‘You believe what you want to believe, and please allow me to do the same. God bless you.’

Social media user Diane Hartshorn wrote: ‘That’s a really crappy attitude to have.’

Craig Rawlinson posted: ‘You possibly insulted a whole community of people. Like you say you are entitled to your opinion as are we all.

‘However if you don’t want people to call you out on your comments best to maybe not say them.’

After 13 years working at the rescue, Katie said it’s the first time she’s cared for a hermaphrodite cat.

When the vets examined Dixie they noticed the genitals were a little unusual. ‘He’s got a vulva and a vagina but he hasn’t got a penis. ‘Two oddly-formed shapes we believe are testicles were removed surgically and sent off to the lab for testing,’ BCWR Care co-ordinator Katie Lloyd said

Katie said: ‘I’ve never come across it and neither has my vet really, it’s all very peculiar.

Dixie was found in a property in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, by new tenants who took the lonely kitten to a nearby vets.

Katie said: ‘Dixie was discovered covered in his own faeces and was quite poorly.

‘The vets clipped him so he wouldn’t soil himself, it was then they noticed his genitals were a little unusual.

‘Health-wise he’s absolutely fine, Dixie’s a lovely cat.’

Katie said that BCWR will continue to care for Dixie until they are fully recovered from the operation and then will start looking for a new home for them.

Katie said: ‘Dixie is a little timid but very loving. He will stay with us until the stitches have been removed in ten days and then he should be ready for adoption.

‘Dixie will be suited to someone without young children or other animals, I think he needs one-on-one attention and lots of love.

‘Despite his uniqueness, it makes him no less loveable.’
