A driver of a £50,000 Mercedes is on the run after he used his sports car to attack two police officers and leave them needing hospital treatment.

Officers are now hunting for the driver, believed to be a man in his 40s, after he failed to stop and reversed his grey Mercedes into a police car at speed.

After ramming the police officers in Colchester, Essex at 10.20am on Monday, the driver of the Mercedes E220 Sport then drove off.

He left two officers with neck and back injuries – though they have since both been discharged from hospital.

The driver also had a blonde woman in the passenger seat with him.

Police say they were originally suspicious of the Mercedes as they believed the car was stolen.

But as they followed the vehicle, the driver failed to stop for officers and instead reversed into the police car.

Officers are appealing for dashcam footage of the collision.

The car has been described as a gunmetal grey Mercedes E220 Sport with a black roof.

An Essex police spokesperson said: ‘We believe the driver of the car was a man in his 40s and he had a blonde woman in the passenger seat with him.

‘As a result of the collision, we believe that the car will have substantial damage to the back of the vehicle’.
