Vladimir Putin could be secretly killed by his own generals after reports they have become increasingly frustrated over the handling of the war in Ukraine.

The Russian President is reportedly struggling with ill health and it is believed the country’s security services could take action and use the rumours to help cover up his death.

It is believed Russia could kill Putin and tell the world he died from health issues such as a heart attack, according to leading security expert Dr Robert Thornton.

He believes that his once trusted generals believe Putin has “gone soft” after stopping efforts to move in on Kyiv and concentrating on the Donbass region.

Dr Thornton says the generals would have the GRU, known as the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, to carry out the killing in secret.

He also spoke of how Russia’s media machine would help break the news to go along the lines of the failing health rumours.

Speaking to Sun Online, Dr Thornton said: “Then you get people on television to say that Putin has not been well and then you have a new leader.

"You’d get someone to say: ‘Poor Mr Putin had a heart attack, from all the strain of his special military operation and we’ve put so-in-so in charge'."

Dr Thornton also suggested Putin would be given an ultimatum beforehand to leave or be killed.

Putin’s health issues have been widely speculated upon in the media ever since his invasion of Ukraine in February.

Reports of him suffering from cancer, Parkinson's disease or being in the early stages of dementia have all been talked about but nothing has been confirmed by the Kremlin.

An official from the office of the director of National Intelligence told Newsweek recently that “Putin is definitely sick” but no word on if he is close to death just yet.

Meanwhile, a former unnamed Russian intelligence source has claimed that he has just three years to live.

Speaking to the Mirror, the spy said: “We are told he is suffering from headaches and when he appears on TV he needs pieces of paper with everything written in huge letters to read what he’s going to say.

“They are so big each page can only hold a couple of sentences. His eyesight is seriously worsening.

“And his limbs are now also shaking uncontrollably.”
