Punter charged almost £8 for bottle of beer jokes he ‘wants to report a crime’

A Scottish punter's claim that being charged £7.80 for a bottle of beer is "a crime" has gone viral.

Callum Tyler was left gobsmacked after the bill for a 660ml bottle of Morett he supped at Giuliano's restaurant in Edinburgh's Union Place.

The customer, who sat at a table outside the Italian eaterie, shared a picture of the receipt on Twitter and wrote: "I'd like to report a crime."

His post attracted more than 3,000 likes and hundreds of comments and shares.

One person commented: "An international war crime."

Another wrote: "That costs £2 in my local shop. You've been had, mate."

A third said: "That's an absolute disgrace."

However, the restaurant, which gets 4.5 stars out of 5 on Just Eat reviews, suggested anyone who complains over the price might have had one too many.

Owner Binati Giuliano, who has had the restaurant for 30 years, said: "A normal bottle of 330ml beer costs £4.20 to enjoy sitting outside our restaurant in one of Edinburgh's historic locations.

"This 660ml bottle has twice as much beer, but costs 60p less than two bottles. He has saved money.

"If you order a pizza it might cost £8. If you order a pizza twice the size and we charge you £14, you can't say you have been charged £14 for one pizza. This complaint is crazy."

From Monday, under the latest easing of lockdown restrictions, both English and Scottish punters will finally be allowed back into pubs and restaurants.

Friends will be able to meet up in groups of six but only table service is allowed. In Scotland, venues will also shut at 10pm.

The struggling food and drink industry is hoping for a flood of customers after months of being shut down.

Industry experts say when pubs were allowed to serve people outdoors for the first time a few weeks ago, many venues reported bumper booze sales with customers spending £2,000 a minute across the UK.

The biggest spenders were men aged 25 to 34, who bought 4.8 pints each on average.
