Pueblo police fatally shoot man they say pointed gun at officer, may have fired

Pueblo police fatally shot an armed man Tuesday evening after authorities say the 43-year-old suspect pointed a handgun at one officer and may have fired at other officers.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. when a woman living in the 1100 block of Jackson Street called police to report a man with a weapon.

According to Pueblo police, the woman reported that the man came to her home and asked if she had seen police in the area; he told her that he knew officers were looking for him, “so he was in turn looking for the police,” according to a news release.

The man pulled a handgun from his waistband, the woman told police, and “manipulated the action as if he was chambering a round,” according to the news release. He then put the gun back into his waistband and walked away, and the woman called police, according to authorities.

A Pueblo officer driving a marked police SUV in the area saw the suspect, and he pointed the gun at the officer, according to the news release. She did not engage the suspect, according to police, but reported his description and direction of travel over the police radio to alert fellow officers.

Shortly after that, police found the suspect on the property of a home in the 1100 block of Bradgon Avenue, and three officers fired at the man, killing him.

The details of what happened at the shooting scene are under investigation, police said, but at least one witness told investigators that the suspect fired his handgun at the responding officers. Whether that happened is still under investigation, police said.

The suspect who was killed has been identified only as a 43-year-old Pueblo resident. His name will be released by the coroner’s office at a later time, police said.

The shooting is under investigation by the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team, and the three officers who fired on the suspect have been placed on administrative leave.
