A pub has rebranded itself 'The Two Helmets' in a dig at Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The boozer formerly knows as the James Atherton in New Brighton, Merseyside, has taken on the new name after the Conservative government extended lockdown four another four weeks in a bitter blow to the pub industry.

It first changed its name last October, calling itself 'The Three Bellends,' incorporating the Health Secretary, the Prime Minister and his then senior adviser Dominic Cummings, the Liverpool Echo reports.

At the time it was a "tongue-in-cheek' protest against the extra tough Tier 3 lockdown measures brought in by the government across Liverpool City Region.

The pub entrance was adorned with a picture of the trio all wearing bells for hats, and now it features Mr Johnson and Mr Hancock wearing helmets.

At the time of the first renaming Daniel Davies, chief executive of Rockpoint Leisure, which owns the pub, explained the reason for the protest.

He said: "The government has unequivocally blamed our sector for being fundamental in the spreading of Covid-19, despite there being overwhelming evidence to prove otherwise.

"Our business has been decimated and their lack of action has compounded the problem.

"Westminster’s further decision to pick and choose which types of venue may open, based on those serving meals for example, is mind-boggling.

"While the renaming of the pub is clearly tongue in cheek, as far as I’m concerned the gloves are off and ministers need to understand the gravity of the perilous situation they have placed us in.

"This is a town that finally feels like it’s on the up and we need funding immediately to protect our businesses and support our staff."
