Pub landlord recalls surreal moment he discovered drinker talking to a ‘ghost’

A pub landlord has recalled the surreal moment he witnessed a punter talking to a "ghost" at the bar.

Mike Sheridan says he saw the drinker, known locally as "Skinner", appearing to have a 10-15 minute chat with another publican in the establishment.

54-year-old Mike thought something was odd when he realised that there was only one other customer at the Royal Oak boozer in Runcorn, Cheshire.

And bizarrely, Skinner wasn't talking to the second customer at the watering hole. Instead, he appeared to be talking to a paranormal spirit.

“I walked into the front bar and said ‘Skinner, who are you talking to?" Mike explained to Gloucestershire Live. “He said ‘I’m just talking to this little old lady here in the corner’.

"At which point, we both turned around and there was no-one there. Skinner said ‘Well she was there a minute ago. She’s just been asking me how I am and what I’ve been up to’.

“But there was not a sign of anyone. Believe what you want.”

With over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry, self-confessed workaholic Mike, from Bolton, has seen and heard plenty over two decades.

Mike was left perplexed however when, at the same 16th-century boozer in Runcorn, he says he witnessed a glass move across a table unaided.

Recalling a more recent memory, Mike says he once danced naked around a Frankie & Benny's restaurant he was managing, also in Cheshire.

Bolton-born Mike's team at the American chain was close to hitting an £11,000 sales target when he says he helped them get over the line in his own special way.

Manager Mike says he told staff he would dance around the dining room if the team reached its goal.

“Then we hit it. We did £11,200 and, yes, I did run naked around the place, Mike remembered.

“I had a menu to hide my manhood and I kept my socks on. You’ve got to think of health and safety!

Experienced publican Mike is currently pulling pints at the Royal Oak on Church Road, Bishops' Cleeve, Glos, where he has been serving punters with partner Sarah for a year.

“Im very front of the house. I hate doing the paperwork and am passing more of that to Sarah," says Mike of his latest role.

“I love being on the bar, wandering around the restaurant, talking to people. That’s what the job is about."
