Herschel Walker, anti-abortion Republican nominee for the race to the Senate in Georgia, has denied reports that he paid a woman he had a relationship with to have an abortion. The woman, who has not been identified by the outlet that reported the story, the Daily Beast, claimed that Mr Walker, a former NFL star, urged her to get an abortion in 2009.
She claimed Mr Walker, 60, wanted to end the pregnancy and it was “not the right time” for the pair to have a child.
She claimed that Mr Walker, who has been backed by former US President Donald Trump for the Senate, reimbursed her for the cost of the procedure.
The woman claimed a receipt from an abortion clinic showing a $575 payment was evidence, as well as a get well card allegedly from Mr Walker. She also claimed a bank deposit receipt with a picture of a signed $700 personal cheque allegedly from Mr Walker was evidence.
Mr Walker responded to the allegations in a fiery statement on Twitter, saying the story was a “flat-out lie” and a “repugnant hatchet job”.
He said he denied the allegations “in the strongest possible terms”.
He added: “I’m not taking this anymore.
“I[‘m] planning to sue the Daily Beast for this defamatory lie.”
He said he was intending to file the lawsuit on Tuesday.
Mr Walker, speaking on Fox News, told the outlet that he “never paid for an abortion”.
He continued to host Sean Hannity: “I can tell you right now, I never asked anyone to get an abortion.”
He then said he sends money “to a lot of people” when asked about the cheque used as evidence by The Daily Beast.
Mr Walker responded: “I give money to people all the time, because I’m always helping people, because I believe in being generous.”

Mr Walker has a history of supporting a federal ban on abortion, insisting he is “for life” and in favour of a no-exceptions ban on the procedure.
He had said there are “no excuses” for going through with an abortion, including rape, incest, or the woman’s health being at risk.
The anonymous woman told The Daily Beast she came forward because of the “hypocrisy” of Mr Walker’s stance, adding: “We all deserve better.”
In the wake of the report, Mr Walker’s son, Christian Walker, posted on social media that he was “done”, and that Mr Walker’s family had opposed his candidacy for the Senate.
He wrote that “every family member of Herschel Walker asked him not to run for office, because we all knew (some of) his past”.
He then commented: “He decided to give us the middle finger and air out all of his dirty laundry in public.”
He added: “I’m done.”
Mr Walker tweeted in a separate post, understood to be a message to his child: “I LOVE my son no matter what.”
