Prince William and Kate Middleton have thanked the UK’s frontline heroes as they shared a Christmas Day message.

They said their thoughts are with people who are mourning lost loved ones and who are spending it alone.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said it "doesn't feel right" to wish a merry Christmas this year, so wished for a "better 2021" instead.

They shared pictures of people working through the festive season.

The heartfelt post also showed photos of hospital patients and people on their own.

They are spending Christmas Day at their country home Anmer Hall in Norfolk with their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

The royal couple wrote on Twitter: "This Christmas our thoughts are with those of you who are spending today alone, those of you who are mourning the loss of a loved one, and those of you on the frontline who are still mustering the energy to put your own lives on hold to look after the rest of us.

"Wishing a merry Christmas doesn’t feel right this year, so instead we’re wishing for a better 2021."

They also shared a list of charities which can provide support for "those struggling today", including Mind, the Samaritans and NHS Charities.

Normally, the couple would spend Christmas Day with the rest of the Firm at the Queen's estate in Sandringham, Norfolk.

The monarch and her relatives have spent the past 32 years celebrating the festive season at the estate.

But the coronavirus pandemic means they are breaking tradition and spending it apart.

The Queen will instead celebrate "quietly" at Windsor Palace with Prince Philip.

A palace spokesperson said: "Having considered all the appropriate advice, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they will spend Christmas quietly in Windsor."

Prince Charles and Camilla are spending the day privately at Highgrove, their home in Gloucestershire.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are spending the day at their home in California.
