Prince Harry made a deal to postpone the Oprah Winfrey interview if Prince Philip died, a friend has claimed.

US journalist Gayle King claims to have been in touch with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since their bombshell interview.

Prior to its airing, there were calls to delay the broadcast – as the Duke of Edinburgh was still recovering in hospital.

King said during a radio show: "Well just so you know, they had done that interview before Prince Phillip went into the hospital and if something, God forbid, had happened to him, the interview would not have run at this particular time.

"But the interview was done and was scheduled before he went into the hospital. But a lot of people have raised that point."

Philip was eventually discharged on Tuesday, March 16, after a month-long stint in hospital.

King defended Harry and Meghan’s decision to speak out against the Royal Family and said Meghan had proof to back up her allegations.

The 66-year-old – who is also close friends with Oprah – continued: "To be in this country saying that his brother and his father he believes are trapped and that the Queen was getting bad advice, but I think that Harry and Meghan both have been through so much for the past three years and they really have tried to work it out privately.

"They really have tried to get help and nothing was working.

"So I think they wanted people to have some understanding about why they made the decision that they made and what they’ve been going through and I do think that they accomplished that.

"I do. I think it was very brave of she and Harry to reveal what they did."

King also called Meghan "smart" and "strong" and described her expectations of royal life.

She added: "It’s just that I think it’s very telling when she said, 'I knew this would be hard, I knew this would be difficult, but I thought it would be fair,' and that’s what’s been so hard for her to accept."

King went on: "She’s always been a very sweet, kind, very thoughtful, very smart cookie."

She earlier told CBS This Morning that Harry had spoken to Prince William and Prince Charles after the interview.

However, she said the talks were "unproductive".
