Prince Charles ‘will be true King as Queen prepares to surrender powers’

“He is starting to take over a lot of the duties and doing the investitures”

Phil Dampier

In two years time, the Queen could bring in the 1937 Regency Act to hand over the “majority of duties” to the Prince of Wales, the heir to the throne.

The law was brought in to relinquish powers if a monarch felt unable to carry them out any longer.

It has been predicted the Queen will allow Charles, 70, to be King in all but name when she turns 95.

Her Majesty, now 93, will keep her title, and her husband Prince Philip, 98, will be named Guardian of the Queen.

Royal expert Phil Dampier said the process would be relatively seamless as Charles has already stepped up.

He told Yahoo’s The Royal Box: “There is talk that when she reaches 95 in a couple of years she may slow down and possible the Regency Act will be brought in.

“She will still be Queen,  but Prince Charles will, in fact, take over most of the duties.

“He is starting to do that already, being at the state opening in Parliament and the Commonwealth conference.”

Mr Dampier added: “He is starting to take over a lot of the duties and doing the investitures.”

Daily Star Online previously revealed how the Prince of Wales has been preparing for when he becomes King.

When the Queen dies, Charles will take over the running of the monarch’s £533million Duchy of Lancaster estate which provides income for the sovereign.

This is a massive private estate consisting of a portfolio of lands, properties and assets which generated the Queen £20million in income last year.

It boasts 45,550 acres of land across England and Wales and holds ownership of the 734-year-old Savoy Estate in London’s West End between the Strand and the Embankment.
