Prince Charles has tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming the first royal to be struck by the disease.

The Prince of Wales is self-isolating with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, at home in Scotland after the diagnosis.

Charles, 71, has mild symptoms but “otherwise remains in good health”.

Camilla has also been tested but does not have the virus.

Clarence House said in a statement: "He has been displaying mild symptoms but otherwise remains in good health and has been working from home throughout the last few days as usual.

"The Duchess of Cornwall has also been tested but does not have the virus. In accordance with government and medical advice, the Prince and the Duchess are now self-isolating at home in Scotland.

"The tests were carried out by the NHS in Aberdeenshire where they met the criteria required for testing.

"It is not possible to ascertain from whom the Prince caught the virus owing to the high number of engagements he carried out in his public role during recent weeks."Prince Charles had met with Prince Albert of Monaco earlier this month, who later tested positive for coronavirus.

The 62-year-old ruler was diagnosed with the coronavirus just nine days after he sat opposite the Prince of Wales at a WaterAid event in London.

The Queen, who is currently staying at Windsor Castle, last saw Charles on March 12 and is in good health.

A source told the PA news agency his doctor's most conservative estimate was that the prince was contagious on March 13.

Charles has spoken to his sons the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex, as well as the Queen.

Prince Philip, 98, was flown to the royal residence in Berkshire by helicopter last week to be with the monarch.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last week broke their silence on the coronavirus crisis having flown back to Canada from the UK.

Posting on their Sussex Royal Instagram account, they wrote: "These are uncertain times. And now, more than ever, we need each other. We need each other for truth, for support, and to feel less alone during a time that can honestly feel quite scary.

"There are so many around the world who need support right now, who are working tirelessly to respond to this crisis behind the scenes, on the frontline, or at home.

The Duke of Sussex flew back to North America in the nick of time following his final public royal engagement.

Meghan got back to Vancouver days after she and Harry bowed out at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.
