Primary school vandalised by sick racists after hiring black headteacher

A school was covered in racist graffiti just months after hiring a Black headteacher.

Forts Ferry Elementary School in New York state, USA, has vowed to "stand up" against racism after it had vile messages scrawled on its walls this weekend (October 29-30), with parents and local residents fearful the attack was motivated by intolerance.

North Colonie Central School District Superintendent D. Joseph Corr that "windows were broken, racial slurs were written, and deplorable images were drawn on the exterior of the building," the Daily Beast reported.

Corr, however, didn't specify what the images were or what slurs were used.

"Let me be clear that this behavior is unacceptable at all levels, and such racist and hateful language and actions will not be tolerated," Corr said in a statement.

"Offensive and deeply hurtful to everyone in our school community, this abhorrent act is an affront to all that we strive to be in North Colonie as a community that is welcoming and affirming to everyone."

He added it was not a coincidence that the attack took place months after Dr Casey Parker, who is black, was appointed principal of the school.

"As a community and as an educational institution, we must join together and denounce this hatred," he added.

"We need to recognize the ugliness and pain of this moment and we must, in word and deed, stand up and say racism has no place in our schools."

The school is located in Colonie and Latham, on the outskirts of the city of Albany, New York, which according to a census conducted in 2000, had a population that was less than 5% black.

Members of the community have also chimed in to support Dr Parker, who was officially announced as the new principal of the school in May of this year after moving from another elementary school in New York.

One parent at the school wrote: "We stand in support of Dr. Parker and his family and every other family of colour who are a part of our community! Dr. Parker is not only welcomed as a principal but he and his family absolutely belong here!”
