Prescribed burn continues at Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood

West Metro Fire Rescue is continuing a prescribed burn that began Tuesday to help train fire investigations students at Bear Creek Lake Park in Lakewood.

The training will continue through Thursday to teach the class of students how to determine a fire’s cause and origin.

The city of Lakewood said on its website some areas of the park will be closed for the burn, and signage is posted on closed trails.

West Metro Fire said they are also conducting a larger burn area south of the lake to train of wildland fire fighting, and residents in the area will likely see smoke from the prescribed burn.

Prescribed burns help reestablish the short grass prairie, enhance control of weeds, stimulate native grass growth, get rid of debris that can be a fire hazard and put nutrients back into the soil, the city of Lakewood said.
