Sixties pop star PJ Proby has admitted he has been single for 22 years because he would only want to date underage girls.

Born James Marcus Smith in Houston, Texas, Proby rivalled the likes of Elvis Presley and Sir Cliff Richard in his heyday.

But after coming to the UK, he scandalously split his trousers on stage at concerts in Croydon and Luton and never returned to the top of the charts.

The now 80-year-old lives in a rented cottage in Worcestershire and has confessed he has been single for more than two decades because his ideal date could land him in prison.

The ageing singer also revealed he never thought his old friend Jimmy Savile was a paedophile.

He told the Daily Mirror: ‘I won’t marry a girl I can’t raise from the age of 12, 13 or 14. I like that they’re young and fresh-looking and don’t come with baggage – nobody’s messed with their heart and broken it.

‘They’re still in school so I can have a hand in their education and make sure their grades are all right, make sure the way they think about religion is all right, and what is and isn’t proper.’

He is currently preparing for a 20-date ‘farewell tour’, which will see him perform everywhere from Rotherham to Clacton.

During a publicity interview with the newspaper he insisted he has never dated ‘young girls’ and had always married them instead.

He married Marianne Adams when she was 16, Judy Howard when she was 17 and Dulcie Taylor, from Blackpool, when she was 21.

Proby said he does not do online dating because the ‘agency would get in trouble’ and would go to prison for setting him up with his ideal match.

He said the only exception to his rule on only dating underage girls is the married BBC TV presenter Lucy Worsley, 45.

The singer said she seems ‘naughty’ and has a ‘youthful’ face.

He also insisted paedophile Savile was unfairly condemned by police and the media.

He told the Mirror: That’s a side of Jimmy Savile I never saw. I went up to his place in Leeds a lot.’

The ageing singer (pictured outside Worcester Crown Court in 2012 where he was tried and cleared of benefit fraud) also revealed he never thought his old friend Jimmy Savile was a paedophile

Another old friend of his was the late disgraced PR mogul Max Clifford who died in prison after being convicted of indecent assault on four girls aged between 15 and 19.

He dated Cilla Black in 1965 and was friends with Elvis Presley, who he says met his future wife Priscilla when she was still a child.

In the 1990s alcohol addiction saw him down give bottles of bourbon a day and suffer a heart attack. He had to teach himself to walk and talk again.

In 2012 he was cleared of benefit fraud.

He added: ‘I always hold out hope, but I probably only have five more years to live. I’m damn lucky to have got this far.’
