Police raid homes of gunman Brenton Tarrant’s mother and sister

Police have stormed homes on the NSW Mid North Coast of family members of Brenton Tarrant, who allegedly massacred 50 worshippers at mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

Search warrants were executed at the home of Tarrant's sister Rosie at Sandy Beach, near Coffs Harbour, and that of mother Sharon Tarrant at Lawrence, near Maclean.

Investigators say that they are not looking for anything in particular, but are searching for any material that may provide their New Zealand counterparts with more information.

"The primary aim of the activity is to formally obtain material that may assist New Zealand Police in their ongoing investigation," a spokesperson for the JCTT said in a statement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed on Friday  that Tarrant was not known to police.

Commissioner Fuller said that Tarrant's only contact with police in NSW was over minor traffic matters, but said that police remained committed to investigating his past.

"We know that terrorism has many faces, we know that individual actors will represent different groups and they're all abhorrent; we investigate them all equally and we protect the people of NSW equally," Commissioner Fuller said.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Investigations and Counter Terrorism Michael Willing said the attack on the mosques did not represent a greater risk to people in Australia, where the terrorism threat level remains at probable.

"Obviously, as part of the initial response, we are looking at whether there are any connections here in Australia but what I can advise at the moment is we have no information to suggest that there are threats connected to this act of terror over in New Zealand, here in NSW or Australia," he said.
