Please Watch All 16 Minutes of Stephen Colbert's Monologue About Trump's Lie-Filled Briefing

Following Donald Trump’s lie-filled White House press briefing about election ballot counting on Nov. 5, Stephen Colbert threw out his original late-night monologue plans and instead delivered an impassioned speech calling out the president and his fellow Republicans. And when we say he didn’t hold back, we really, truly mean it. The segment will make you shake your head, shed a tear, think deeply, and let out a chuckle, all in a matter of 16 minutes, so strap in for quite the emotional roller coaster.

Purposely wearing all black because of Trump’s attempt to “poison American democracy,” the talk-show host said, “If you did not know that Joe Biden was getting close to 270, Donald Trump just provided all the proof you will ever need.” Said proof he’s referencing includes Trump baselessly alleging voter fraud, spreading conspiracy theories about the electoral voting system, and falsely declaring himself the winner of the election, rather than sitting back and allowing the (very valid) mail-in ballots to be tabulated. Holding back tears, Colbert expressed a frank lack of surprise over Trump’s actions. “We all knew he would do this. What I didn’t know is that it would hurt so much,” he said. “I didn’t expect this to break my heart. For him to cast a dark shadow on our most sacred right from the briefing room in the White House — our house, not his. That is devastating.”

Colbert then implored Republicans to denounce Trump’s unpresidential, “fascist” behavior because “for evil to succeed, all that is necessary is for good men to do nothing.” Specifically calling out Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, who has yet to comment on Trump’s handling of the election, he said, “Who is silent gives consent, so Mitch, we heard you loud and clear: you’re OK with this . . . Americans are going to . . . count who’s willing to speak up against Donald Trump trying to kill democracy. And they’ll count who will stay silent on this desperate attack on the bedrock institution of this truly great nation.”
