Kahuna jumps over another hound, called Paige, stands on a sofa a safe distance away, and the pair stare at the mess.

The clip cuts to flames rising out from the grate, with Kahuna still lying on the settee with his ears pricked up.

The dog is then seen wandering close to the fire, before the noise of the flames spooks him and he saunters into another room as the video ends.

Los Alamos fire department said the grate was creating enough heat to melt the clothes.

This passed into the heater and worked as a fuel to start the blaze inside an hour.

The department wrote on Facebook: ‘LAFD recommends homeowners ensure that smoke alarms are installed and working, that no combustible items be placed on or within three feet of heating devices or heat producing appliances.’

Kahuna and Paige escaped uninjured and firemen limited the damage to the house.
