A UFO was spotted over the streets of a Derbyshire town at the same time that plane spotters claimed aircraft had been prevented from landing at a nearby airport.

Residents of Long Eaton watched on in amazement as the mysterious flying object hovered above them in low light, flashing shades of red and green.

The sightings on June 9 coincided with local aviation enthusiasts reporting that at nearby East Midlands airport multiple planes had been prevented from landing.

In around five minutes of footage captured of the UFO, it can be seen hovering above the ground as a Long Eaton onlooker says: "We might be on X-Files".

Speaking toDerbyshire Live , Bill Pearce said: "When I got home from a pool match, my neighbour was outside waving at something in the sky.

"Initially I looked out and I thought, what is that? Because it was changing colours and what have you. Some years ago, I saw a white light in the sky and it shot over to one side and stopped then did it again to another and then it just shot off and it wasn't a plane but I never saw anything in the news about it.

"People seemed to think that it is a drone when I put the video on Facebook and some comments have said it was a plane but it's not a plane because it didn't make any noise. I think there were some issues that caused aborted landings at East Midlands Airport last night so they may be linked."

Several planes were delayed at East Midlands Airport that night and into the early hours of June 10, according to the flight tracking app Flight Radar.

A check of the planes’ flight paths found that some had circled over the midlands before being cleared to land.

Plane spotters in the midlands that night have since suggested that the drone was likely linked to the nearby Download festival, which will see thousands of rock fans head to Donnington Park for the weekend.

The largest rock festival in the UK, Download started on Thursday, June 9 and will run until Sunday, June 12, leading to speculation that the drone could have been launched by a fan.

The Daily Star has approached East Midlands Airport to clarify whether the two incidents were linked in any way.
