Photographer behind Harry and Meghan photoshoot has link to Prince Philip

The photographer that captured Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for Time magazine also snapped a photo of Prince Philip when he was just eight years old.

Pari Dukovic, now a well-respected photographer who has worked with the likes of Barack Obama, took the photo of the Sussexes for the first time for Time magazine's 100 most influential people of 2021.

But for Mr Dukovic, who now works for The New Yorker, this was not his first time snapping royalty.

The photographer had actually snapped the Duke of Edinburgh, in his hometown city of Istanbul back in 1992, when he was just a young child.

As a boy his dad bought him a Russian KMZ Zenit camera due to his infatuation with photography, and he managed to get some snaps of Philip as they both went to a church service.

Mr Dukovic gave the photo to the church leader, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew l of Constantinople, who then handed it to Philip as a souvenir from the church visit.

The now US-based photographer posted two of his photos of the Duke of Edinburgh on April 17 this year following his death.

  • Prince Andrew 'now worried' after High Court decision and 'not usual blasé self'

He wrote: "When I turned eight years old, recognising a passion in me, my dad gifted me my first camera – a Russian Zenit.

"Since then he has archived my photographs through adolescence. Four months after I got this gift, Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh came to Istanbul on an environmental trip to visit with the Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomew I.

"My dad got us access to the service and this is where I took these two photographs, my first ever of someone influential. This experience instilled in me the idea that a kid can create and dreams can become reality.

"We gifted this photo to the Ecumenical Patriarchate which eventually made its way to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh as a memory from his visit. I'm thankful for this life altering experience that my dad made possible. Rest In Peace, Prince Philip."

Now he is back snapping royals with Harry and Meghan, who appeared for the first time together in Time magazine’s icons list.

The photo was accompanied by a complimentary profile written by a friend of the couple Jose Andres.

He wrote: "In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don't know, the duke and duchess have compassion for the people they don't know.

"They don't just opine. They run toward the struggle."
