Philippines: Life inside one of the world's most congested jails

Philippine jail population has been growing at rapid rate since President Duterte launched controversial ‘war on drugs’.

The Philippines has the world’s most congested jails – overflowing with tens of thousands of people arrested, particularly since President Rodrigo Duterte announced his “war on drugs” in 2016.

The Philippine jails are currently housing more than 140,000 inmates against their combined capacity of nearly 20,000. Most of these people haven’t even been convicted.

Activists accuse the police of locking up innocent people.
