People in their 20s are just as forgetful as those who are approaching 60, study finds

PEOPLE in their 20s are just as forgetful as those who are approaching 60.

More than half struggle to find the right word at least once a week and 50 per cent also can’t remember why they entered a room, a study found.

Some 40 per cent of 20-somethings misplace their phone at least weekly and 17 per cent admit losing it several times each week.

Edinburgh researchers found the memory lapses were as common in young people as they were among those in their 50s.

Dr Laura McWhirter said: “I think people think if you start to forget things — something like misplacing your keys — that it is something to worry about, but it is normal.

“It is just a function of how the brain works and how attention works.

"If you are doing lots of different things and not concentrating when you get in and just put your keys down somewhere, you may well forget where you have put them.”

James Goodwin, of Loughborough University, added: “When we forget things as we get older, it’s easy to think we are losing it.

“But forgetting things doesn’t necessarily mean we are on the road to dementia."
