Waiter minute! Penguins mimic table-serving birds that danced with Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins

  • Two young penguins were snapped in this position during a trip on South Shetland Islands, Antarctic
  • Andre Erlich, 71, who took the photos said they were running to their parents to get beg for some food
  • The birds, gentoo penguins, are the third largest species of the bird weighing up to 17.6 pounds

Penguins don’t often look graceful on land, often pictured shuffling awkwardly over a thick sheet of ice.

But, the trend certainly didn’t apply to these two young penguins snapped in a mirror-image position to the pair that danced with Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

In scenes reminiscent of the Disney classic, the gentoo penguins were photographed in line with one foot off the ground in the Barrientos Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.

Andre Erlich, 71, who captured the iconic image while on an expedition from Paris, France, said the two posers were chasing after their parents begging for food.

Gentoo penguins are the third largest species alive with adults weighing up to 17.6 pounds, according to the Australian Antarctic Division.

The species numbers around 387,000 breeding pairs with the largest populations found on the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and the Antarctic Peninsula.
