Pence REFUSES to wear a mask during coronavirus briefing as Dr Fauci and experts again tell Americans to cover up – The Sun
MIKE Pence refused to wear a mask during coronavirus briefing as Dr Fauci and experts again tell Americans to cover up.
The Vice President was seen without a face covering while speaking at a White House Coronavirus Task Force news briefing at the US Department of Health and Human Services in Washington.
While stood at the podium, Pence declined to order Americans to wear a mask.
Instead, he said: "We just believe that what's most important here is that people listen to the leadership in their state, the leadership in their local community and adhere to that guidance.
"Whether that have to do with facial coverings, whether that have to do with the size of gatherings."
During the briefing, CDC director Redfield told Americans "to wear face coverings when we're in public," echoing Dr Anthony Fauci's advice earlier this week.
"Plan A: Do not go in a crowd. Plan B: If you do, make sure you wear a mask," the coronavirus expert said on Tuesday.
Pence has mimicked President Donald Trump's approach to wearing face masks during the coronavirus pandemic.
During his recent rallies, the Trump campaign has said face masks will be provided, however, wearing one at the event is not mandatory.
The president has also been seen flouting recommendations to wear a mask at his own rallies and public appearances.
However, during an interview on Thursday the presidential hopeful said that he would make it mandatory for American's to wear coverings.
"I would insist that everybody out in public be wearing that mask," the Democrat said in an interview with KDKA on Thursday.
"Anyone to reopen would have to make sure that they walked into a business that had masks."
Before making his bold statement, the presidential hopeful insisted that "the one thing we do know is these masks make a gigantic difference."
He was then asked if he would use executive power to make wearing a face mask mandatory.
"From an executive standpoint, yes I would…" he said. "I would do everything possible to make it required that people had to wear masks in public."
On Thursday, the United States recorded the highest daily COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row as infections topped 37,000.
As of June 25, the deadly bug sickened more than 2.4million people with over 124,000 deaths on American soil.
