Paragliding tourist crashes on beach after harness snaps seconds after take-off
Heart-stopping video has emerged of a tourist falling onto a beach when his safety harness broke just seconds after he took off into the sky.
The incident took place on Las Gaviotas beach in the city of Mazatlan, northwest Mexican state of Sinaloa.
In the video, the paraglider is strapped to the safety harness on the foot-launched glider aircraft before other men pull him forward by a boat so that he can quickly rise to the air.
As he reaches around five metres (16ft) high, his harness suddenly snaps.
The hapless paraglider briefly suspends in the air with his arms and legs flailing before he quickly picks up speed as he comes crashing down to the beach.
He smashes into ankle-deep water which then creates a large splash around him.
According to local media, he was hospitalised with several fractures and heavy knocks.
The area around Las Gaviotas beach is popular with tourists, in particular, because of its beaches lined with resort hotels, and paragliding from the beach is one of the many attractions offered to holidaymakers.
Local media indicated that the injured man was originally from Durango, although no further information was given.
It was also reported that the accident had actually happened on 20th February but was only made public recently.
The extent of the man's injuries was not revealed, but it is believed that the authorities are investigating the incident.
Last September in the Scottish Highlands, a man died and a woman was left seriously injured in a paragliding accident.
