A million people have been plunged into a lockdown with the world's most severe Covid restrictions after the virus resurfaced in a district of Wuhan, China.

Citizens in the district of Jiangxia have been ordered to follow three days of 'temporary restriction', starting yesterday (27 July).

The new restrictions will see residents living inside four affected neighbourhoods expected not to leave their homes at all.

Large gatherings have also been banned and restaurants and entertainment venues have been forced to close, while most public transport is down and churches are also expected to shut.

And despite the dramatic decision, Brits would be shocked at the cause of the lockdown – as it was introduced after just four asymptomatic cases.

China follows a 'zero-Covid' strategy, meaning in theory that even one case can trigger a strict lockdown.

Two of the cases were found through testing, performed regularly in the city, and two were close contacts, CNN reports.

Authorities stated their goals were to 'further reduce the flow of people, lower the risk of cross-infection and achieve dynamic zero-Covid in the shortest time possible', meaning that residents of many cities in China have not experienced the luxury of relaxed restrictions that other countries have.

In fact, footage released in April showed people in Shanghai screaming out of their windows after being forbidden from leaving their houses for over a week thanks to local restrictions at the time.

Another upsetting video showed a Shanghainese medical worker being pursued in the street by an angry mob who were furious at the ongoing restrictions in China.

The sprawling metropolis went back into total lockdown on April 5 of this year, with food supplies said to be running low.

Wuhan attracted media attention in late 2019 and early 2020, when the virus first emerged, as the birthplace of Covid.

It was also the first city to be placed under a strict lockdown, paving the way for copycat rules to be put into acti around the world.

Because of the severity of its restrictions, China has been seen as a Covid success story and enjoyed lifted restrictions much earlier than in other parts of the world.

However, now that the nation isn't prepared to live with the virus as many other countries are, it seems the tables have turned.
