Over 150 firefighters battling huge blaze in East London

Dozens of firefighters were battling a massive blaze in Dagenham this afternoon.

The fire ripped through a car workshop in the town in east London throughout the morning.

At least 16 fire engines and 100 firefighters were at the scene at the Chadwell Heath industrial estate by midday.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing into the air from miles around in dramatic pictures on social media.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Twenty five fire engines and around 150 firefighters have been called to a fire at a car repair workshop at Chadwell Heath Industrial Estate on Kemp Road in Dagenham.

“Half of a single storey workshop is alight.”

Station Commander Barrie May added: "Local residents are advised to keep windows and doors shut as there is heavy smoke in the area."

The fire brigade, which were first called to the incident at 8.27am this morning, said it had received 73 calls on 999 alerting them to the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
