Only Fools and Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst blasts ‘PC writers ruining comedy’

The actor reckons writers are too frightened to make anyone a “victim” in modern sitcoms.

And he believes his most famous sitcom would not be allowed by telly bosses these days because it showed Del Boy and Rodders fighting all the time.

The 58-year-old said: “It wouldn’t be made at all today. They’d look at the precis and say it’s just two people fighting each other all the time.

“But you have to have cruelty in comedy. If you take the victim out of the comedy or joke, there’s no joke.”

And asked if comedy had become too fearful of taking the mickey, he added: “I think it’s going that way. It’s quite PC, rightly or wrongly.

“Comedy is about: ‘I’m glad that didn’t happen to me, look at him, he fell down that hole.’

“Chaplin knew that. We laughed at Chaplin because it wasn’t us falling down that hole.”

Nicholas is performing in Man Of La Mancha in the West End alongside Frasier star Kelsey Grammer.

But he admitted he is star-struck by the famous American actor.

He said: “I consider Kelsey Grammer to be this astoundingly famous actor and I’m just sitting there next to him, I love it.”
