One killed in aircraft crash at Royal Birkdale Golf Club

ONE person has been killed in a plane crash at the famous Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Merseyside.

The aircraft came down at the course, which has hosted the Open Championship ten times, at around 7pm on Thursday evening.

The person, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, Merseyside Police said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene around 7pm and screens were erected around the crash site.

The force said: "We can confirm following a microlight aircraft crash at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are still establishing the facts and the identity of the person and enquiries are ongoing."

Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to extinguish a fire which broke out when the aircraft hit the ground.

Road closures are in place in the area including on Coastal Road.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
