Incredible photos captured one of nature's weirdest events, a tsunami of fog, right before it engulfed an entire city.

Onlookers were taken aback as the wave of fog rolled over Plymouth on Thursday evening (April 14).

The weather phenomenon, also known as meteotsunami, occurs when condensation from warm air merges with cool seawater, creating the effect of a quick-moving blanket of clouds.

Images of the breathtaking wall of clouds were captured in Plymouth Hoe by Bianca Guguila and shared with Plymouth Live.

Sam Whitfield, of UK Weather Chase, described the surreal sight as "impressive". It's the latest in a few unusual occurrences in the skies over Plymouth.

On April 10 a beautiful halo was spotted around the sun, while at the beginning of this week an 'angel cloud' was spotted in the city centre by a local woman who found comfort from it.

Mr Whitfield said: "Basically it’s a massive amount of fog. When conditions are just right in late spring or early summer, the condensation from warm air merging with cool seawater can create this dramatic effect which is what’s been seen."

It comes as the Met Office forecaster an Easter heatwave this weekend, with some parts of the UK predicted to be hotter than Ibiza today.

Yesterday (April 15) also marked the hottest day of the year so far in the UK – St James Park, London recorded 22C.

In their latest video weather forecast meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: "More in the way of sunshine across north-eastern England compared to Good Friday as well, and drier for Northern Ireland.

"[The] best of the sunshine [will come] across central and southern England. Not quite as warm as Good Friday but highs still around 21C, possibly 22C."
