NYC beaches are ‘just not ready’ to open any time soon, de Blasio says

Jersey Shore beaches may be re-opening for Memorial Day weekend, but that will not be the case in New York City as Mayor Bill de Blasio suggested Friday that Big Apple shorelines won’t be opening any time soon.

“On the beaches we’re just not ready,” de Blasio said during his daily coronavirus press briefing, explaining, “It’s painful because we’d all love to be able to go to the beach with the hot weather, but it’s not safe yet.”

Hizzoner said that the city has made “great overall progress” in its fight against the coronavirus, but “not enough progress to meet our goals” or the state criteria that needs to be met in order for the five borough to start a phased reopening.

When it comes to the re-opening of the city’s beaches like Brooklyn’s Coney Island Beach, Rockaway Beach in Queens, and Orchard Beach in The Bronx, “We’re going to look at it constantly,” de Blasio said.

“The day may come, but we’re not there yet,” said the mayor.
