A travel boss has warned that travel restrictions could mean Covid test free holidays won't return until 2022.

CEO of Wizz Air, József Váradi said that due to the "still uncertain" summer we are facing this year with the traffic light system, he believes it could be next spring by the time it goes back to normal.

He claimed that due to problems with the vaccine rollout as well as lockdowns and border closures still in place, airline capacity may not be above 80 per cent like he had hoped.

The boss told Bloomberg: "It might be possible to operate within these ranges, but we can’t guarantee it.

"It’s not a matter of capacity planning but governments imposing restrictions."

He said it is unknown whether the travel demand will return later in the year despite the government's efforts to make it available again from May 17.

PM Boris Johnson confirmed earlier this month that travel abroad will involve a traffic light system based on a destinations Covid risk and each zone will have corresponding restrictions.

Countries on the "green" list won't face quarantine but will need a negative PCR test before returning to the UK.

The yet-to-be-announced "green" list is unlikely to include any popular European holiday destinations as it expected to only have listed Gibraltar and Malta.

Countries like Spain, Greece and Italy, are battling rising cases and a slow vaccine rollout so are not expected to be on the list.

Amber nations will likely require negative PCR tests before travel and some form of quarantine, as well as a lateral flow test on arrival.

However, hotel quarantine will continue for all red list nations.
