Fifteen people killed in eastern Baghdad clashes on Sunday: police, medical sources

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – At least 15 people were killed in clashes between Iraqi security forces and anti-government protesters in Baghdad on Sunday night, police and medical sources said.

The 15 were killed in the Sadr City residential district of the capital, where police backed by the armed forces used live round and tear gas on the crowd of demonstrators.

The death toll after six days of unrest has now passed 100 and more than 6,000 have been wounded.

WHO to hold Philippines summit after polio outbreak

The Philippines has announced the return of polio type 2, an incurable disease that was previously believed eradicated there.

    The World Health Organization is meeting in the Philippines after the country announced an outbreak of polio.

    Environmental samples from sewage in Manila have been confirmed as containing the virus.

    The discovery follows the outbreak of dengue fever and measles in the span of less than a year.

    IAAF World Athletics Championships conclude in Doha

    Qatar was the first Middle Eastern country to host the international sporting event.

      The head of world athletics, Sebastian Coe, says taking his sport’s biggest stand-alone event to new countries beyond its traditional borders is vital to track and field’s future.

      Coe praised the quality of the athletes’ performances at this year’s event. Fans in Doha witnessed more than 20 new continental records, twice the number seen in London two years ago.

      Vice Premier Liu He will lead the Chinese contingent in high-level talks that begin Thursday.

      The Chinese delegation reportedly won’t be looking to include commitments on reforming Chinese industrial policy or the government subsidies, according to Bloomberg.

      That offer would take one of the Trump administration’s core demands off the table.

      People close to the Trump administration say the impeachment inquiry isn’t affecting trade talks with China.

      China’s markets will return to trading on Tuesday following a weeklong holiday.

      German manufacturing orders weaker than expected

      German manufacturing orders fell August, data from the Federal Statistical Office showed Monday, boosting the likelihood of economic contraction in the third quarter in Europe’s largest economy.

      Manufacturing orders declined 0.6% on the month in adjusted terms. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal forecast a meager 0.2% growth on the month.

      On an annual comparison, orders plunged by 6.7% adjusted to calendar and price effects.

      “Weak demand continued in the industry,” the Ministry of Economics said. “The industrial business activity remains subdued for the time being,” it added.

      Domestic orders fell by 2.6%, while foreign orders rose by 0.9%, the ministry said.

      Dialog Semiconductor To Buy Creative Chips For $80 Mln In Cash – Quick Facts

      Dialog Semiconductor Plc (DLGNF.PK) announced Monday that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Creative Chips GmbH, a supplier of Integrated Circuits or ICs to the Industrial Internet of Things market.

      The acquisition is for a cash payment of approximately $80 million, which will be funded from Dialog’s balance sheet. The deal also includes an additional contingent consideration of up to $23 million, based on future revenue targets in 2020 and 2021.

      The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019.

      Germany -based Creative Chips is a fabless semiconductor company with a growing IC business supplying a broad portfolio of industrial Ethernet and other mixed-signal products. The company is expected to generate revenues of approximately $20 million in calendar year 2019 with revenue growth of over 25% per annum anticipated over the next few years.

      Dialog said the new acquisition is strategic to capture the significant growth potential of the Industrial IoT market.
