Tennis: Shapovalov lands maiden ATP title in Stockholm

STOCKHOLM (AFP) – Rising Canadian star Denis Shapovalov lifted his first ATP title on Sunday (Oct 20) after a 6-4, 6-4 win over Filip Krajinovic in the Stockholm Open final.

Shapovalov, 20, did not drop a single set throughout the week in Stockholm and blasted 16 aces to see off the 60th-ranked Krajinovic.

World number 34 Shapovalov became the first Canadian ATP singles champion since Milos Raonic won at Brisbane in January 2016.

Serbia’s Krajinovic, a runner-up at the 2017 Paris Masters, fell short in his bid for a first career title after losing his third ATP final.

Miami Dolphins DT Christian Wilkins ejected for throwing punch in Bills game

It took just two plays into the game, but Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins hit the showers early.

In Sunday’s contest against the Buffalo Bills, Wilkins was ejected shortly after the second play from scrimmage, an incomplete pass, for throwing a punch against Bills offensive tackle Cody Ford.

During the play, Ford appeared to remain engaged with Wilkins to complete his block. The action of the play did die down, but Ford remained engaged. Ford did appear to eventually let up after the whistle. Wilkins, however, threw a quick, right-handed punch that looked like it connected on Ford’s helmet.

Elizabeth Warren says she’ll soon outline how to pay for her health plan

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Democratic presidential contender Elizabeth Warren says she’ll release details on how she’d pay for her “Medicare for All” plan in “the next few weeks.”

The Massachusetts senator came under criticism from her opponents during last week’s Democratic primary debate for refusing to say whether her plan would raise taxes on the middle class to pay for expanding Medicare to the entire nation.

At a campaign event in Indianola, Iowa, on Sunday, Warren said: “What I see is that we need to talk about costs.”

She says she’ll outline those costs and how to cover them soon.

Democratic rival Bernie Sanders has acknowledged that his plan to expand Medicare to everyone would require higher taxes on the middle class while eliminating most health care expenses for the public.

Man sprays bear repellent during California Trump protest

Authorities in Southern California say a supporter of Donald Trump was arrested after spraying bear repellent on a small crowd protesting the president at the Santa Monica Pier.

Santa Monica police say pro- and anti-Trump demonstrators were shouting at each other Saturday when a scuffle broke out.

A video posted online shows a man wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat circling the crowd and then unleashing a torrent of spray from a canister. Officials say nobody was seriously hurt by the repellent, which is similar to pepper sprays used by police.

The Los Angeles Times reports authorities arrested a man who could face charges including violating the terms of his parole from a previous weapons violation. His name was not released.

Investigators are trying to determine whether a second man also sprayed the crowd.

New York Medal of Honor recipient won’t run for Congress

Medal of Honor recipient David Bellavia (bell-uh-VEEH-uh) says he will not run for the 27th Congressional District seat recently vacated by Chris Collins.

In a statement Sunday, Bellavia said he has “a new responsibility to the U.S. Army.” He said he plans on “traveling the country, as an ambassador for Western New York, educating and influencing future soldiers and fellow citizens, as well as training and advising military leadership.”

The Iraq War veteran ran in 2012 and lost to Collins in the Republican primary. Collins pleaded guilty in an insider trading case earlier this month and resigned from Congress. An effort to recruit Bellavia to run had been underway for months.

Bellavia left the Army in 2005. He is the first living Iraq veteran to receive the Medal of Honor.
