A mystery screeching noise has plagued a quiet seaside town, with residents claiming the cause could be supernatural.

People living at a Gwynedd resort in Tywyn, Wales, woke up to a "weird screeching" and moaning noise, leaving them baffled after it was heard just after midnight.

Some residents believed the sound originated from a foreign source while others described it as "like metal being dragged”.

Reports from across the town quickly spread on social media as bleary-eyed inhabitants demanded an explanation, having been woken by the noises.

“T’was a siren!” one person commented. “To some a screech… to others a song, luring them to the sea.”

“Thought it was a bin lorry,” said one person. “Sounded dreadful, as if it needed a good oiling.”

Several reports suggested it was emanating from the town’s railway station and one resident believed Network Rail was to blame, reports NorthWales Live.

“They have an ultrasonic track tester in use on the Cambrian (Line),” he said.

“It creates a sonic resonance through the track to check it, so would likely make it sing/screech given what people have reported.”

He was right to point the finger at Network Rail but his explanation was slightly off the mark.

The company is currently replacing worn rails on the Cambrian Line and the reported noise was caused by a defect with a rail-mounted trailer carrying new rails.

Overnight track repairs are due to continue in the Tywyn area for the rest of the week. Mindful of the impact on residents, the faulty trailer has been fixed and on-site staff have been reminded to minimise noise as much as possible.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We apologise to local residents for any disturbance caused by the loud screeching noise coming from our work site, earlier this week. We’re pleased to confirm the faulty trailer has now been fixed, so noise levels should be at a minimum going forward.

“We’re very grateful to the local community for their patience during our essential railway maintenance works.”
