The tweeter also claims that nobody on the platform came forward to help the distressed woman.

The tweet was tagged for the attention of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Transport for London (TfL) and Labour MP David Lammy, asking them: “Is this London?”

Mr Lammy responded to the tweet, saying: “This sounds horrific.”

TfL social media staff responded to the tweet, asking the woman to contact BTP, and confirming that they will look into why the emergency call button went unanswered.

A number of Labour groups based in north London have organised a protest vigil outside Turnpike Lane Tube station in a show of solitary with the victim.

In a tweet, Crouch End Labour said: “We cannot stand by when racist attacks happen in this toxic hostile environment.”

A spokeswoman for the police force said: “British Transport Police are investigating following a report of a racially aggravated assault at Turnpike Lane station at around 10.45am on March 30.

She added that they take all reports “very seriously” and appealed for anyone who witnessed what happened to contact them.

Independent hate crime monitoring group TellMAMA claims that anti-Muslim hate crimes across the UK have risen considerably since the New Zealand terror attack.

They claim that in the week following the attack on two Christchurch mosques, they saw a 593% increase in reported incidents of hate crime.

Usually, the group receives information about 30-35 incidents per week, but claim that between March 15, the day of the terror attack, and March 21, 95 incidents were reported to them.

Brian Woodhead, Director of Customer Service for London Underground, said: “This sounds like a dreadful incident. We never tolerate hostile and violent behaviour on our network.

“All of our customers have the right to travel without fear of verbal or physical abuse. We are doing everything we can to support the BTP’s investigation.”
