MURDER cops are probing the death of a one-year-old boy months after he was placed with a couple for adoption.

Leiland Corkill was rushed to hospital with a severe head injury and died the next day.

A man, 34, and woman, 37, were then arrested on suspicion of murder.

Leiland’s devastated ­natural family buried him in their home town of Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Gran Yvonne Corkill, 57, said: “It’s horrible. He was a happy, cheerful little boy and we can’t believe what’s happened.”

Paramedics were called to a house in Barrow-in-Furness on January 6.

Leiland was taken to a local hospital then moved to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

Natural mum Laura, 37, was alerted and she and Yvonne raced to his side.

Yvonne said: “I was there when he was born and I was there at the end. I can’t believe the two were just a year apart. It’s too much to bear.”

She said Laura was distraught when Leiland was taken into care within 48 hours of his birth.

Laura still saw him regularly before he was put up for adoption.

Last August she posted pics of him on Facebook.

She wrote: “I don’t need to be constantly reminded of my bad choices from my past experience.

“I will live with them for the rest of my days.”

Cumbria council said Leiland was in its care and placed with potential adoptive parents before a final order was granted.

The authority also faced criticism over the death of Poppi Worthington, who died aged 13 months while in its care in 2012.

An inquest into Leiland’s death was adjourned on January 26 pending a police investigation.

Police said a couple from Barrow have been bailed.

They were arrested on suspicion of murder, assault, ill-treatment and neglect, cops said.

The council has recommended a full independent safeguarding review.
