Mum dies of sepsis after taking paracetamol every day to manage stomach pains

A MUM died after accidentally taking too much paracetamol to cope with unbearable stomach pains, an inquest heard.

Louise Waller, from Hull, had taken the over-the-counter painkillers every day for over four months to manage the agony from colitis and haemorrhoids.

The desperate mum was taking "large handfuls" of paracetamol every three hours, her partner said.

The pills caused her liver to fail and the 39-year-old was rushed to hospital in September last year, Hull Live reports.

Her condition worsened and she developed sepsis from a perforated bowel and the underlying colitis, which led to multiple organ failure.

The mum-of-two slipped into a coma and her life support had to be turned off 11 days later.

She died on September 22 last year.

An inquest at Hull Coroner's Court on Friday heard she was ineligible for a liver transplant because she had a history of alcoholism.

She also suffered from depression and anxiety, the court was told.

Louise’s partner said she had a complicated relationship with her family and was seeing a therapist for help dealing with her mental health issues.

Dr Laslo Karsai conducted a postmortem and found Louise died from multiple organ failure caused by a paracetamol overdose.

He said: “I do note that she was suffering from very painful medical conditions and she was given medication but was also self-medicating with extreme doses.

“Unbeknown to her, this was causing her irreparable harm.

“Following the evidence, she died by multi organ failure due to unforeseen paracetamol toxicity to overcome pain from haemorrhoids and undiagnosed colitis.”
