MPs believe Theresa May will be 'gone in weeks' after Brexit shambles
CABINET Ministers believe Theresa May will be “gone in weeks” after the worst week of her three-year premiership.
One told The Sun they believed senior Tory Sir Graham Brady – head of the powerful 1992 backbench committee – would have to go and “tap her on the shoulder” because the chaos couldn’t continue.
They said: “I can’t see this continuing beyond the next few weeks. Either she’ll have to go to get her Brexit deal through or they’ll be a vote of confidence.”
The Sun earlier this month revealed Tory party chiefs fear they could lose 1,000 councillors in the local elections on May 2.
Tory MPs yesterday said they knew of councillors who were refusing to stand – while activists were ripping their membership cards – because of the state of the party.
Backbenchers claimed Theresa May has lost authority after Wednesday’s rebellion – when 13 ‘Remain’ Ministers defied the Government to take No Deal off the table.
Then on Thursday night, 7 Cabinet Minsters voted against the PM’s motion on a Brexit delay.
One MP said: “It’s like we’re in a death-march.
“It’s so day to day. There’s no Government and the Conservative Party needs to get its act together.”
Theresa May survived a no confidence vote from her own MPs in December – meaning she cannot be booted out by Tories until the end of this year.
But seething Brexiteers have privately indicated they could back a no confidence motion from Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn.
Others claim they could back her Brexit deal if she gave way to a new leader to negotiate a trade deal with the EU.
George Freeman, the PM’s former policy chief, on Thursday, said the PM should quit if it secured the extra votes required for her Brexit deal.
He said: “This chaos can’t continue. Something has to give.”
