Kamikaze drone blasts into Moscow skyscraper

A huge explosion rocked a newly built skyscraper in Moscow this morning – the sixth attack in as many days in the capital region.

The plush new One Tower high-rise was rocked by a huge blast, with floors between the tenth and 15th levels targeted.

Video shows the massive blast at around 3am local time, which is believed to have been caused by a drone.

It comes as the US warned Ukraine it did not back or facilitate the strikes inside Russia.

The recent strikes on Russia have underscored a new phase in the war with Ukraine, which marks its grim 18 month anniversary on Thursday.

Russian airspace closed, with the main airports in Moscow suspending arrivals and departures.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said: “Air defenses downed a drone in the Mozhaisky district of Moscow region, while another unmanned aerial vehicle hit a building under construction in the city.”

It was later claimed that three drones were used, two of which were gunned down by Russia.

The third was manipulated by electronic warfare devices but still hit the skyscraper.

Damage was sustained by other buildings in the Khimki suburb of Moscow, which is close to the international airport Sheremetyevo.

The mayor added: “City emergency services are inspecting the area within the City perimeter for the effects of the strike.

“Several windows were smashed in two adjacent five-story buildings. There were no casualties.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene, which was close to the 75-floor Mercury City Tower.

The attack came as Ukraine celebrated its annual Flag Day. Flights from the Moscow airports – Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky – after the explosion.

A Washington department official added it was the choice of Ukraine as to how it decides to defend itself against Russia.
