This is the moment a thrill-seeker waterskied across a weir on the River Wear in Durham.

The stunt was filmed by Durham resident Mike Parker, who said it was ‘amusing’ but was concerned the daredevil may hurt himself.

Someone reported the watersports enthusiast and emergency services were seen out in force at around 3.40pm yesterday.

As police arrived on the scene the man took off across the river, being pulled in by friends using a wind-in maneuvre, according to The Northern Echo.

Footage of the waterskiing begins with a view of the River Wear and a person seen dipping their feet into water at the opposite side as police officers watch on.

Someone had reported the jet-skier and emergency services were seen out in force after the river stunt at around 3.40pm yesterday

The camera pans round and a police officer can be seen standing on a balcony, at which someone says: ‘There’s PC plod. Hello Hello Hello.’

After a few seconds, someone says ‘Here he goes’ and the person sat at the side of the darts forward on the waterski.

The thrill-seeker then skis across the weir on the vehicle and the cameraman zooms back in on the police officer watching.

Mr Parker said: ‘He swam across the Wear and climbed onto a long black sewage pipe and hung around for a bit.

‘Meanwhile we heard sirens blaring we could see the police driving across the bridge.’

It was assumed the man was a ‘Youtuber or Tiktokker’ as he was being filmed and received a signal from someone that the clip was not a good one.

Disappointed with the first take, Mr Parker said the man then climbed back up and swam across to have another go.

Police officers had gathered and the man even had a conversation with one before jumping backing into the river to try again.

‘Someone reported it and a whole load of emergency services had been scrambled,’ Mr Parker added.

‘We thought was amusing. There was speculation as to whether or not he would injure himself.’

A spokesperson for the County Durham Fire and Resuce service said boat crews were dispatched but stood down when it was made clear they were not needed.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said they received reports of concern for a man’s welfar in the River Wear, Darham City, shortly after 3.30pm.

‘It is believed the caller thought the man was stuck and contacted us with good intentions,’ the spokesperson said.

‘Officers gave the man advice about water safety and told not to re-enter the water after he climbed out on his own.’
