A mum has undergone life-saving surgery to amputate half of her arm after suffering a massive electric shock.

40-year-old Jue Snell, says she suffered pain similar to “soaking your arm in boiling hot oil” after her hand became stuck to a faulty plug socket while charging her laptop.

She suffered from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, which causes constant and severe pain, for a year before undergoing the surgery in a bid to “restart” her life.

Following 12-months of hospital appointments, her condition worsened and she developed a high fever and vomiting.

The mum-of-two, from Northwich, Cheshire, developed broken skin on her hand which quickly led to sepsis after a bacterial infection took hold.

Doctors were left with no choice but to amputate the lower half of her left arm in an effort to save her life.

The model said: “I was kept in hospital for a day for checks as doctors were concerned in case I had a heart attack – thankfully I didn’t.”

Jue’s hand never re-gained feeling, and her lower arm grew thinner as a result of minimal movement.

She said: “I constantly felt like it was soaking in boiling hot oil and when exposed to the cold – it was like my hand was in shattered glass.”

The physical pain grew over the next year, which meant she was bed-bound three to four times a week in hospital.

Jue’s husband, Mike, drove her to A&E as she became “disorientated with fever” before she was diagnosed with sepsis a few days later.

She said yes to doctors wanting to amputate her arm as the pain was “affecting her life.”

The model opened up about the reality of living as an amputee, which she said made her feel as though she had lost her identity.

She added: “I suffered with post-traumatic stress disorder and felt as though my body was shutting down when I was stressed – almost every situation caused me to have panic attacks.”

The mum credits her husband and two children Holly, 17, and Ella-boo, 7, as the reason she kept going.

Five years later and Jue is the cover girl for Models of Diversity – an agency specialising in disabled models.

Jue says she has been given a new lease of life, which has left her feeling “empowered”.

Angel Sinclair, Models of Diversity’s founder, said: “She has taken a terrible situation and is using it to inspire, motivate and challenge.

“She is not undoubtedly beautiful on the outside, but the inside too and that is why she was our cover girl.”
