The Met Office has issued a yellow-level weather warnings as a storm heads to the UK today (Wednesday, August 2).

A thunderstorm warning that was already in place was update this morning to cover a larger swathe of the country, stretching from the south-east to the north-west.

It is in place from 9am to 8pm. "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected" to impact those under the warning, the Met Office said.

People have been told to expect: "Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes.

"There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Delays to train services are possible.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is likely."

A second new warning was issued for rain in Yorkshire and the north-east. It is in place from 11am to 8pm.

The Met Office said "flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely" and again added power supply disruptions look to be on the cards.

"Spray and flooding on roads" could make journey times longer, the national weather service added.

Moreover, a wind warning that was issued yesterday remains in place across the south coast until 6pm this evening. The Met Office said: "Unseasonably windy weather will affect coastal southern England on Wednesday, leading to some disruption to travel and outdoor activities."

People there have also been told power supplies could be damaged. "Trees and temporary structures such as marquees and tents" could come down, and delays on all forms of travel are "likely".

All the warnings have been ranked at the yellow level meaning. The Met Office explains: "Yellow warnings can be issued for a range of weather situations. Many are issued when it is likely that the weather will cause some low level impacts, including some disruption to travel in a few places.

"Many people may be able to continue with their daily routine, but there will be some that will be directly impacted and so it is important to assess if you could be affected.

"Other yellow warnings are issued when the weather could bring much more severe impacts to the majority of people but the certainty of those impacts occurring is much lower.

"It is important to read the content of yellow warnings to determine which weather situation is being covered by the yellow warning."
