Met Office issues danger to life weather warning as ice to grip UK

The Met Office has issued a severe ice warning as temperatures look set to plummet tonight, with an Arctic blast sweeping in.

A blast of freezing cold air will grip the nation overnight into Friday morning as areas see bone-chilling lows of about -4C.

NetWeather predicts it will “feel like” -3C overnight in London, -1C in Birmingham and -2C in Manchester.

But before the cold air bites, a band of rain will move across the country tonight to leave behind wet roads and pavements.

The plunging temperatures tonight will then see wet surfaces ice up across England and Wales to leave behind dangerous conditions.

The Met Office has now issued a yellow weather warning for ice, which is in place from 12.15am to 10am on Friday.

It warns there will be icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, and there could be some injuries from slips and falls.

The Met Office’s warning reads: "An area of rain is expected to clear southwards across much of Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and the south of northern England on Thursday evening.

"Following this surface temperatures are expected to fall away below freezing and following the rain and recent wet weather many surfaces are likely to remain wet leading to icy stretches forming where these not treated."

The warning is in place for a large stretch of the Midlands in England, and Wales.

It covers the likes of Norwich, Cambridge, Nottingham, Birmingham and Chester.
